Please join us in Midway’s Library on Thursday, March 9th for the launch of artist Lisa Lapinski’s new book, Miss Swiss. A conversation between Lapinski and artist Jay Heikes will begin at 4:30 pm and focus on the publication and Lapinski’s practice. This event is part of a larger nine venue launch tour, including stops in New York, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Copies of Miss Swiss will be available for purchase.

Jay Heikes, in collaboration with Jonathon Rosemond and Wyatt Lasky, presented Discount Gargoyles in a Minneapolis parking ramp as part of Midway’s recent Off-Site series. Heikes was also included in the two person exhibition Jay Heikes and Kirk McCall in 2002 and two group exhibitions: Weak Architecture in 2001 and The Secret Life of Objects in 2009. In 2007, Lapinski presented the exhibition Linz Wedding Song at Midway, and in 2017, she organized the exhibition Anna Helm, Lisa Lapinski, Hirsch Perlman. We are happy to welcome her back to the Twin Cities to celebrate the launch of her new publication and look forward to seeing you on the 7th!

    From the publisher, Inventory Press:
Lisa Lapinski: Miss Swiss is artist Lisa Lapinski’s most comprehensive monograph to date. Lisa Lapinski is an artist living and working in Houston, Texas. She received her BA from University of California, San Diego, an MFA from Art Center College of Design and is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Rice University. She was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004.

Published on the occasion of Drunk Hawking, her 2020 mid-career survey at Visual Arts Center (VAC) at the University of Texas at Austin, the book includes never before published images of Lapinski’s exhibitions and artworks from 2000 to the present. Miss Swiss features contributions by Bruce Hainley, Graham Bader, Kyle Dancewicz, Sabrina Tarasoff, and MacKenzie Stevens, as well as a conversation between the artist and linguist Viola Schmitt. Designed by Apogee Graphics, the book provides new insights into Lapinski’s influential and idiosyncratic practice.

Jay Heikes works in Minneapolis and lives in St. Paul, MN. His work has been shown at BAMPFA-Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; ICA-Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis; and in the 2006 Whitney Biennial. He has been included in solo and group exhibitions at Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York (2018); Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago (2018); Federica Schiavo Gallery, Milan (2016); Grimm Gallery, Amsterdam (2015); and Reserve Ames, Los Angeles (2015). In 2016 Heikes was an Artist in Residence at The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX. He is currently working towards a solo exhibition opening September 2024 at Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York.
